Where to start
Hey guys,
Havent even had my 67' a week, and she's almost apart. Like most, the body was in fairly good shape, and as panels, carpets, etc... were removed, there was the wonderful brownish metal flakes, yeup not the frosted kind either. So wondering where's the best place to get started on this project? Next question about the floor pan, what do you guys recommend as a guideline for determining weather to salvage some of the floor or just buy the full replacement piece. What about the front end stuff thats pretty much trashed?
Thanks all.

Wow
All the floor pans need to be replaced so my only suggestion is call NDP (National Parts Depot) and order all the stamped parts you are going to need. The rust looks so far advanced no telling how far the frame has sagged (if at all).
Do the important pieces of the frame still have shinny metal just below the surface rust? There are not holes or rust all the way through them is there?
When cutting out the old floor pans and doing the other stuff to the frame it probably would be a good idea to better support the frame so it doesn’t shift when old parts are removed.
Good luck

Yea Gun, looks like most of the important pieces have many rust spots. Got ya a picture too? What do you think?

I can see you did a good job of getting the bad stuff out and the rust spots on the frame dont look super serious from the pictures. I have never redone the flooring on a mustang before. NPD makes full-length floor pans for a bout 60 bucks a side or something. It might be about time to weld them in if you think the sub fame and components are worthy. There are several other members who are doing the same thing right now. They maybe able to give more in-depth solutions or ideas since they are about at the same spot you are.
I would think you are close to the add new stuff stage.
Take a wire wheel to the frame componets and if they shine up nice then its probably a green light for the new floor pans. If they look like swiss cheese then probably time to replace them as well.

I'm redoing the whole floor in my mustang because of a rust problem, i called NPD and ordered the Full floor pan for 599 or 699...im not sure which. but it comes with everything you need except the seat platforms and i'll be putting it in my car in a month or so after i get the floor pan dipped so it never rusts and i dont have to ever replace them again...but so far im satisfied becuase there will be no welding needed except that of welding the floor pan to the car...and the seat platforms, so when i put it in i'll be sure to keep you up to date
What did you use to cut out the old floor pans, a plasma cutter? Nice clean job. Since the jack stand is basically holding up the rear of the car, it appears your rear frame rails are still viable, but as stated, wire wheel brush it to see if it is still solid through and through. Just remember that the fame rails rust from inside out. Once you get it all cleaned up, ping it wit a hammer to see if the rails are still viable. I would go ahead and add frame rail connectors while I had it torn down to the point you have it. You are reaching a dangerous point of having the symmetry of the car shift to out of alignment, so get that done ASAP. Tie those bottom rails together before replacing the floor pans. Get back with us with your progress.
All i've used is a pneumatic air grinder. Only have a 26 gal. air tank, so it took a little while. But worked out nicely, cause while the tank was pumping back up pressure, I easily found other things to tear into. I'll get the wre wheel to it first thing in the morning and let you guys know also with some pics. Thanks for the info. so far.
Just a little tip... X-brace the car as soon as possible and if there are any drivertarin pieces left in it, remove them. These cars really move around when you take structural components out like floors etc... Remember this is a unibody platform and it WILL react to such invasive procedures. You can't stop it from happening but you can minimize the resulting misalignments etc... JMHO, Dean
What exactly is "taylorjones" getting the floor dipped in?
Which bring me to a good question. As im getting these old rusted panels out, and start removing original paint/coating from areas that are okay, should I spray or cover these newly freed areas with any special stuff, like primer or rust inhibitor, etc... ??
