Tossing around an idea.
I was tossing around an idea of changing my coupe into a fastback. I know it's theoretically do-able, but I'm not sure about cost etc.. I know it will probably pull away the value of the car but I don't have the cash to get a fastback since all the ones I saw were 12k+. I figured 4k for the coupe, maybe 1k for all the sheetmetal, and 1.5k for the paint. I know I'm missing stuff but a rough estimate would be around 9k for all the parts and I can install them myself with the help of friends(Navy underwater welders rock). Anyway, shoot me some input about how cool or stupid I would be for doing something like that. =) I really would like to know pros and cons for doing something like this. Thanks in advance.
I would tell you to take the coupe to a convertible. There are kits available to do that. The fastback would be a whole lot of work and really hard to make it look like it was original.
I have seen this done and it is not that hard. The best way to do it is to start with a fastback that is either wrecked really hard or so rusty that no body would want to put it back together.
yeah.....or else is like taking a $100 dollar bill, bleaching it...then reprinting it with $50 all over it....its really not good to kill good fastbacks.
i gotta start some kind of "PETA" type thing but for fastbacks. I hate those clowns like alec baldwin and stuff.
i think ive see people selling the fastback roofs somewhere online too...google that maybe.

Also note the idea that your future Fastback will still be identified as a Coupe via Indentification number--losing a big authentic piece of the car.
That only matters if you plan to resell or take your car to shows, although i'm sure you'll still do fine at car shows in the "non-original" areas.
I personally wouldn't do it, you'd be better off just buying a fastback.

As far as reselling it, I don't have the original brakes, wiring, engine, suspension, ignition, and soon to be floorpan, frame rails, tranny, and quarters, etc... As it is, the money I would get for it is almost nil, I'm looking to fix this up and make it my own really. When I actually get enough for a FB I would get it but as they stand right now, they are 12k+ for a project car. Way more than I have to spend anytime soon... I don't know, I'm still tossing it around. Either way I'm going to have to dump some serious money into this car so I may as well make it interesting to look at right?
