Yeah, you can change the VIN on the door, and the inner fender, but it would be mucho difficult to change the VIN on the original title and registration papers. However, it could have been junked, and someone got it re-titled somehow. Since Ford threw away the paperwork on the early cars, even Marti can't verify it's original configuration. If it were mine, I would just chalk it up to the fact that the original configuration may never be found out, and fix it like I wanted it. To heck with resale value.
Oh, I just had a brain fart. Why not look under the passenger side fender to get that VIN? A lot of trouble, I know, but that is just another place to look for the VIN.

Hi again all! Thanks for your ideas and inputs , I think I've got the mystery solved.
I look thru some more of the papers I received with the car and found back in 2000
there had been a complete overhaul on the brake system, all new drums, shoes, lines, hoses
cylinders, new e'brake cables over 1300 bucks spent, this corisponds to what the lady said that sold us
the car she said she had new brakes put on all the way around, anyway so I give this business that done the
work a call but of corse
they could'nt remember the job, but they are a Vintage Mustang shop where they repair and restore
Mustangs since 1984. I explaned all about the Vin# V-8 and Mans. transmission the 4-lug wheels all the conversion that took place to him and he too just as we all thought ,would'nt know why anyone would do such a thing and he begain to tell me how maybe someone took 2 cars to make up 1 maybe changing all the good stuff over to the better car maybe 1 car had been wrecked and the other being a doner for parts
and just happen to be a 4 lug car, could have been many reasons why! I would have preferred not to think it was a wrecked car. no body ever mention the fact that it had been, but then againg who would!LOL
he also said something about the steering of a 6 cyl car had 2 connections to the drag link Pitman arm ? idler arm?
would be a way to know if it is a 6 car and only 1 connecton for a V-8 car..
I hav'nt researched this yet, anyway I'll keep all of you informed,
Thanks again: Musting

Like I said before, stranger things have been done. At least you are now getting a better picture of the history of the car.

Could be the car was hit and that vin was on the door that was put on. So it could be a different door from a V8 car.

never go by the door vin, go by the one on the drivers side fender appron in front of the shock tower. With tat being said, I have seen an all oriogonal 1965 K code with a factory installed 200, 3 speed and 4 lug brakes...someone on the line put in the wrong digit, it happened.

as for the bondo, my money is on this car was an I6 car and was stolen

That may be true. Like I said, go with what you have and make it like you want it. There are no numbers matching parts for these cars anyway.

that's what I thought, yet about a month ago I was at Mustang Country in Paramount, CA and the owner showed me a 68 C code vert there....the factory C4 had the VIN stamped on it, so sometimes it happens. I knew about K-Codes, R-Codes and BOSS'eswith VINS stamped on the block and tranny, but a C-code was new for me

It could have been in an accident back in the day, and then the Fender was replaced. Then the title was lost And someone had to get a new one. That is my simple theory.

OK. the car does have a door tag/plate, the NO# as follow
6F07C399960
Body- 65A
Color- either 8 or 3 ( hard to make out)
Trim- 26
date- 30F
DSO- 54
Axle- 6
trans-6
Now what does all this tell me?
and one other thing, I have seen many styles of wheel cover/ hubcaps on the early Gt's & coupes
but none of them look like the ones on this car, can any of you ID these covers to what year they came?
finding this out may just be the car these parts came from...
Thanks again: Musting
