Juniors first car

Well my sons 14th birthday is coming up on Saturday. He's been raised right, he bleeds Ford blue. Been working with me in my shop since he was old enough to hold a wrench or swing a body hammer. He's pretty good now. Anyway I told him he'd have a car when he was 16. Thats 2 years from now. I bought a 1969 Mustang fastback for him. Well, I got a shell and a title. The rest is up to him. It needs everything. If it could be unbolted from the car it was. It's not even a rolling chassis at this point. My plan is to make this a father son project. We'll work on it together. He works, I drink beer and make sure he doesn't hurt himself. Occasionally give some advice. I have a pile of FE engines for him to pick one he wants to build. A couple of transmissions, some rear ends. It'll be good. To pay for it he's going to come to work with me after school. I'm a painter in a body shop. My boss is going to pay him $7 an hour to clean the shop. If he needs something for the car and it's not laying around then he's going to have to pay for it himself. I just thought I'd share this with ya'll. Seeing as how were all Mustangphiles here. I'm passing the torch to a new generation. Anybody else here do something like that? It seems to me that this way he'll appreciate the car more considering all the work he's going to put into it.

If you're interested I have an enclosed car trailer and will do free pick up and delivery. Dallas isn't that far of a drive.
Sorry. I have my hands full with the 3 kids I have. However if you're ever in the Falls drop in, I'll put you to work on something. I have a 64 Galaxie convertible and a 99 Lightning in the shop now. After that it's a 67 Merc Cougar, oh and I also have to pull the FE outta the wifes T-Bird and put in a new one. My old lady (man I hope she doesn't see that) is a great cook so we'll feed you good.

Wichita Falls is a nice place, did my Tech School training there at Sheppard AFB back in the 80s. Sounds like the kids are gettin great knowledge.
I have two daughters and they love my old hotrods, always wanting me to stomp it at the lights so they can feel it launch.. The oldest wants my 72 GTO, so her name is already on the title. She can rebuild it in the summers when she comes to visit, she used to help me in the garage handing me tools and running the floor jack since she was 2. Having a dad who will let you learn and support you is a great thing. I wish I woulda had that growing up, it makes all the difference. A parent who discourages a kid from dreaming, thinking big, or downplays accomplishments isnt giving his child a fair shot and creating a mediocre worker at best.
I have a couple FEs now, wish I had them back when I was 17.. something about a 67 Cougar with a 428 in it just sounds right to me.. luxury and power and you dont see them everywhere, something unique. Got any pics of yours George? Mine was red with black top, black interior, has tilt steering. Havent seen tilt on any other 67s. 289 C4 and 3.0 open 8" rear. Might end up with a Cleveland or a stroked 302 and an AOD. Never gonna sell it since its my first car. Mom wanted me to get a orange mid 70s Plymouth Volare' with a slant 6 auto.. looked like a clown car. She never has understood...

I try to raise my kids right. My dad was a ****bag alcoholic. His idea of a good time was beating the hell out of his wife and kids. He was never there for us, we went hungry a lot because he drank away his paycheck. Back in 79 he got sented to life without parole. He beat my mom to death with a crow bar. I wound up raising my 2 younger brothers when I turned 18. Not an easy upbringing but he motivated me to be better. It didn't work for my youngest brother, he was so messed up he died of a heroin overdose in 91. My other brother is in the Navy. Last time he called was Christmas 95. I want my kids to be happy and healthy. I want them to have a good work ethic and have the things I never had. I try to set an example, be firm and fair. Proud to say I've never laid a hand on my kids in anger. Have to say, I do spoil my little girl. She's got me wrapped around her little finger. Just can't bring myself to say no to her. For a 7 year old she sure does like to buy clothes, and teddy bears, and lets not forget picture books. I pity the guy she starts dating (when she's 30) she'll be high maintenance.
My 67 Coug is the car I'm pumped about getting to work on. It has a 428FE with a tri power (six pack) intake and a 4 speed. I don't think the intake is original but the rest of the car is. It's so complete too, amazing. Pretty low miles, it was parked in good condition and just left to sit. I got it when I painted a truck. Guy couldn't cough up the $12,000 for his custom one-off pearl paint job. Held the truck until he could come up with some sort of payment. He paid me with the Merc, 2 360 FE's, 4 390 FE's, and a 428FE plus $3k cash. We both came out about even. The wifes T-Bird has an FE in it too, I think it's a 390. She cracked the block on it last summer. I have a couple more 428's and a few tri power intakes. Probably throw something together to make that T-Bird fly. The 360FE in my 76 truck is built for torque. Haven't had it on a dyno yet but I'm ball parking it at 450-475. Fe's rock man. I want to stuff one in my 83 F-100 someday. The Galaxie has a 352 FE in it.

Got a bud who is a LT in the USAF right now, he has a 67 390GT that had a 428CJ swapped in when it was less than 3 years old. I like the FEs but where I am from they are tough to find since the truck guys love em, and there is a Cobra fan who has dried up all the big ones. He owns a machine shop that does alot of FE work, so he buys all of them he can find. A good set of heads costs more than most 4V Cleveland stuff, so I build those instead. Well and large ci Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles. I dont do chevy, its just too booring and uninspired.
Main thing I like about the FE is that they're so versatile. Theoretically you could take a 332 block and bore and stroke it to a 428SCJ. With a little bit of help they can be torque monsters. Not all that great at making horsepower but they're torque monsters all right. For getting a heavy car off the line quick fast and in a hurry nothing beats a well built FE. I hear ya on the cost. 10 years ago I could take $1,000 to a swap meet and load the bed with FE stuff. Now $1,000 barely fills the space behind the seats.
I'm hoping my boy will enjoy working on cars as much as I do. My pop ran sevral service stations while I was growing up and I watched is every move. My son is 8 now and it's all about video games. Hopefully when I begin this restomod on my 65 fastback he'll join in the fun. I may have to force him a first but I think he will enjoy it. It's good to see other's raising there kids around cars. I've always been told learning alittle can save you alot.
