Default Exhaust Tips

I took my tips off the other day to clean them up. They were a mess! Well I cleaned them up nice but they look all scratched up and hazy. I mean they are clean but they look like a hazy blury mirror with swirls on it. I used a metal polish on it which made it look nicer but it still needs work. What should I do to make these babies shine.

The finer the better, you don't want to take anything off except grime and imperfections... Then with a bit of polish it should come up great...

Actually, I just saw that you said you took your tips off to clean them, if they are chap ones that screw on from Pep Boys, just buy a new set...

They are the tips that came with my MagnaPacks. They are far from cheap pep boy tips.

If you don't have a polisher, then put them back on and get some Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. Use a sock or something long and narrow as such and apply a liberal amount of polish on the tip. Then apply some to the sock, wrap it around the tip and start twisting back and forth, back to front - lick twisting a string around a stick to start a fire. Do this until desired result.

I did this on my 82 and 85 GT tips, without sandpaper and it worked great. But if you have to use sandpaper this should still work great.

Oh, I believe those are polished stainless steel... very common these days on aftermarket exhausts. Who knows how they get so scratched-up, but you're probably going to need more than a chrome polish to get the scratches out, but it's worth a try first.

If that doesn't work, try some Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish next... on the underside or other inconspicuous area. If it looks like it's going to do the job, get a PowerBall to make the process go faster.
