Default Polish vs Wax

I've been reading up on polish vs wax and see many different opinions. I would like to know what is best for a new car. I have a 2006 Mustang GT windveil blue. I don't want to slave over the paint (my truck is black) and want to know if I should just apply a polish after washing or just a wax? Does a polish protect the paint or just shine it up? It seems best results are to polish then wax but that's too much work for me. I also see lots of 'wax as you dry' products. Are those any good? Do they protect, and if so, for how long?

Then there is the old school nufinish product that claims you only have to apply it once a year. Does anyone recommend that stuff?

Thanks!

I use a "zip wax" with every weekly wash. Its doesn't require any more time than just washing and drying, you spray it on when the car is still wet and then polish it off, leaves my car shiny, but I don't think it really protects it. And then at least every other month I wax my car with Zymol, I swear it makes my car waterproof, water will not stay on the car, even in the rain, and as you know black is a bitch, my car is over a year old and still looks brand new with this regimen.

Since you are not willing to dedicate time or effort to it, just go with a one step cleaner wax and call it done. Mother's Reflections Advanced Car Wax is pretty good. It will last much longer than any over the counter spray wax.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to try out a cleaner wax but also going to buy some abrasive polish for my truck while I'm at it. The swirls have taken over. From what I've heard, I only need to wax the new mustang until the paint needs polishing to fix imperfections.
