Your painted interior
Ok, coming from me who does interior dye work every day, you will atleast want to sand it down. Painting over those cracked areas, it won't cover well and you'll see the imperfections. You should be good to go by just sanding it. I would use like 800 sandpaper. The primer you use will kinda make or break it. That's what gives the dye something to adhere to, it's the base. I can't give any recomendations, the base and top coats I use are specific to my company, not available to the public.
Hey Britt21, it's an extremely simple process. As long as you remove each trim piece, so you don't get overspray on anything else, properly clean the pieces before paint, you'll be fine. Be sure to clean the pieces though, if you don't, the paint might not adhere because of the oils on the trim pieces, then it'll be screwed up.

just sand it down and wash off all the dust particles and then spray ur primer and it should say how long to wait for another coat, then it should say how long it takes to dry, then the paint should b the same, as with clear
For painting those trim pieces you should clean them off with rubbing alcohol, I'm pretty sure that's what they suggest using. You won't need to sand much, but you might need to do more because you said it's cracking. Just sand until it feels smooth and even, and until there's no more cracks. The plastic trim pieces don't have much of a grain, they are only slightly textured, so don't worry about it being too smooth.
that is exactly what I would like to do with my 'stang...what type of paint did you use? My issue is that I have the electric green.
I have seen several painted interiors and too often I think they get carried away, but to me, that is just right.
thanks for posting pictures
cheers
