car shows
Does anyone have any ideas for car shows. Like the displays of the car/plaques just how to dress up and decorate the scene that its parked at. Any car show people out there?
Underhood dress-ups always score points. But remember to take them off after the show because once you start driving it around and then open up your hood, the chrome and hoses get all dirty or scratched and becomes less attractive for your next show. Sure it's a lot of work and money but remember that underhood dress-ups are just for show and not performance. Some other things I see that scores points are scale models of their cars sitting on their intake manifold or dashboard. Idk if that scores any points but it still looks good IMO.
FIX: Scale models might score people points but not judges.
I also realize now that you asked for mainly outside your car. A model in bikini posing on your hood helps, but ifthat area is lacking, with posters or plaques some people have boards that list through their mods and pics of the process they went through. Time/dyno slips maybe? Trophies of some sort in front of your car always attracts attention.

Here is a pic of my display:

The sign in front is basically a "info" sign with all the features of the car. The doormat is a SCOA thing I had made that matches the SCOA flag. The frame on the radiator cover is my letter of authenticity from Saleen. In the back is a display board I made that has Saleen license plate, an original dealer brochure pic, and my original window sticker. And on my custom trunk lid liner is where I stick all my dash plaques, plus the pony and Saleen door sill emblem that you can see. Of course all of this little display is preceed by about an hour of fine detailing

Wow, i had forgot i listed here too. That is a nice set up that you have there. That just gave me the best idea. I have a Sunsetter telescopic Fpole, but its a 20FT pole, do yall think its too big? It would reach to the sky! Anyways, nice set up. And also Chekc these out, which would work better?

Honestly I wouldn't spend $ on signs like that. You will build up a collection of them real fast as most show hosts give them out in the registration goody bags. I think I have about 6-7 of them, and have turned down more than that. I put one on the radiator cover by my Saleen letter, one on the open door's window trim, and one on the trunk sill.
I live in Dallas Texas and have thought about going to a few car shows myself. Ive never entered in one though and dont know where to start.
Does anyone live in Texas and know of any car shows comming up?

Do a search for all of your local car clubs and see what they have coming up. Also search for a website that lists all local car shows. We have one here in Indy called oldcarsonly that SEVERAL clubs and associations list their shows on for the entire year.
Google or yahoo by your city name and car shows. When I was in AZ for a meeting last year with a day to kill that is what I did and I found 3 shows that day to choose from.

I'm planning on going to Mustang Week in Myrtle Beach this summer. Is there a list somewhere of what judges look for? I've heard "clean, clean, clean." Are they going to be looking for mods or what? I've never even been to a 'real' show, so any pointers would be great. Thanks. Oh, and what "underhood dress-ups" would be worth the effort?
It all depends on the club that is hosting it. If it is a Mustang Club and they are a MCA (Mustang Club of America) affiliate, then they will going off the MCA Rules. You should be able to find these on their website. If it is another type of car club then its really a toss up. I've been to quite a few "open" shows hosted by various groups and taken home Best Of's and also taken home nothing.
MCA judgesare looking for all original features and CLEANLINESS. Mods and dress-ups tend to be a turn off. Oddly enough, vert tops must be up, windows up and doors shut, hood and trunk open. They will open your door to look at the interior. They will also run a finger in the typical dirty places to judge your detailing (door/trunk/hood jambs, inside the wheels, and probablylook upunder the caras well.
But the bottom line is, do to the car what you want to do and show it as you want to show it. I'm not one to show for the judges. If they like it, fine - if they don't, fine. I show because I like to look at other peoples fine rides and have people appreciate mine. I show my '85 vert with the top down and boot on with windows down. If that means I loose 10-20 points and miss on a trophy, so be it
