Wet Sand and Polish?
Ive done a search on the topic and fielded a few threads that mention the subject even some vague how to's. However I havent seen any one mention having a body shop do this and how much such a service might cost.
Last night I went to a auto customs shop to inquire about a tint job and to have some custom vinyl cut for my wheel's center caps. The guy I dealt with there seemed very knowlegble and suggested that I have my car wet sanded and polished by a professional. There really isnt anything wrong with the paint as the car is only a month old but he says itl take care of the orange peel affect my factory paint job has. He basically said itl make a already good paint job look like a million dollar job; "mirror like" is how he described it. So does anyone have any idea how much a wet sand and polish job would cost? And does anyone think this is a bad or good idea? and why?
Thanks.

I've been considering this for my car, I've been told the same about it making a good paint job a great paint job. I had found a detail shop that does it but when I went to their location, the shop was out of business. I've yet to find another in my area.
I wouldn't wet sand a new car unless you absolutely have to. You are going to be taking off quite a bit of clearcoat. If you think the paint looks good now I wouldn't worry about doing it. Most of the cars of today have orange peel on them. Just my opinion....
I would love to try wet sanding or medium cut polish on my black 2004 Subaru. It is what I drive in the winter and take to the campground. The black has gold pearl in it and although it looks good from a distance, up close I have lots of scratches and pucks from tree sap.
I own a random orbital buffer but have only used it for removing wax.

Update: I looked into this alittle further and got a few opinions and prices. Basically I was told that it isnt worth the money on a brand new car; espcially a black one. From what Im being told a true wet sand and polish on a black car can cost anywhere from 500 to 1000 dollars. And most of the more knowlegable guys were leaning closer to 1000. One guy I spoke to said....if the car was any other color it might be worth it, but black demands perfection and that takes time and thats ultimatly is what leads to the heavy price tag. So I opted agaisnt it....maybe in a few years.
The problem with wet sanding is it removes that fine top coat of the clear which provides UV protection to the car. I would not recommend it for a stock paint job for the entire car. To reduce defects in small areas is another story.
