question for juztang
my car is well almost 8 years old. its got some swirls and oxidation and i get kinda jelous looking at my brothers 05' black paint. how can i clean the paint and get it looking new?
Being 8 years old it probably does need a good polishing and swirl removal. The best way to to this is to invest in a Porter Cable Polisher. You can get good results by hand but can take your paint to a whole new level with a PC.
The first thing I would do would be to give the car a good wash and then claybar the whole car. The clay will take all of the contaminants out of the paint and leave it feeling silky smooth. Now you are ready to polish and remove swirls. If you have medium to heavy swirls you want to use a medium compound/polish to correct these. Once you use the medium polish you want to step down to a light polish to really refine the finish. Polish will bring out shine and reflection, correct swirls and scratches, plus prep the paint for the next steps. Now I would apply a glaze to really make the paint even slicker and to give a really deep and wet look. Lastly to protect you can add a sealant or carnauba wax.
Like I said above, you can do all of this by hand but you will get so much better results with a machine polisher. The good thing about the Porter Cable is that you don't have to worry about burning up your paint and you can get awesome results even being a beginner.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions I can help you with.

If you havent clayed your car before, you will be in for a shock. Just the clay alone made my 02 Expedition look like it was glass and just waxed, and that was before the polish/glaze/sealant. Let us see some pictures when you go ahead and do it, should look great.
Juztang helped me out huge with mine. The paint is 14 years old and was oxidized. I grabbed a PC and used the following:
Optimum Compound - white or orange pad
Optimum Polish - white pad
Red Moose Glaze - white pad
Poorboy's EX-P sealant - gray pad
MooseWax pure carnuba - blue or gray pad
Unbelievable the depth I got from my paint. If you look back in this forum, I have a thread with some pics in it.
