Detailing tips. (before and after pics added)
So my cousin and I got my uncles 69 GT500 for the week to prepair for the upcoming car show. Niether of us have really detailed a car and I was wondering if and of you have some tips for us. We will be using Banana wax because our friend has a gallon of it and is letting us use it for free.
It is all original paint if that changes anything.

Thank in advance for the tips.

Ehh. I've never heard of banana wax, and with this kind of a car, I wouldn't try anything too advanced. I use Mothers for my car. I'll tell you what I do, and you can decide what you want to do, but be careful with such a classic especially if it's your first time.
Wash it with any kind of car wash soap... NEVER DISH DETERGENT. Wash it atleast 2 or 3 times, until you believe it is relatively clean. Buy a nice clay bar system, mothers.... has one. Go over the car, body panel by body panel. It really works. believe me, when you go over it, it should feel like glass. Wash it again w/ the car wash soap to get rid of the residue from the clay. Then buy the mothers 3 step process, first is step one which does the same as clay bar but helps get the smaller particles off. Then step 2 which is a sealer and glaze, basically a polish/protectant. Finish with step 3, caranuba (sp?) wax and run your finger along this beauty. Should feel like glass, and when you lean against it, you should fall straight on your as$. This should all take over 6 hours, I can take an entire weekend if I"m doing both inside and outside, but i'm crazy also.
Goodluck!
Edit: Oh and do it buy hand, you wouldn't want to burn the paint using an electronic buffer. And also use microfiber towels, anything else may scratch the paint.

Thanks...We are not looking at anything too envolved, it usually wins with just a dust wipedown, but we felt like doing something extra this time.
Would it be bad to just wash it and then wax it, without clay bar?
And Banana Wax comes highly reccomended from a good friend, so I trust it as a wax.

Yes- it is bad to wash and than wax if the car has never been clayed! Waxing after washing is not enough as you seal the industrail fallout and rail dust and bird droppings and so on and so forth. Now being you have had the car for a while and it is original. I feel you would benefit from just washing ,claying, and than waxing. Claying the car is real easy and should take about 20 min-1 hour depending on if you take your time or not. Only use microfiber from removing anything from the paint (wax products and drying). Oh and post some pics of the before and after for comparison. I used the clay bar on my bros 2007 MKZ and it sat on the dealer lot for a couple of months before he took delivery. Many say it is not necessary to clay a new car much les one from 1969! Anyway I could not see any change in the look of the paint as the car is new but the feel was very different. Smoother and feels like clean glass. Than you wax it to preserve the finish that you just cleaned. Go the extra step and if you get Best of paint on an original car as the paint looks great in the pics I see here than the extra 20+ mins is worth it. I assume the car is seldom driven so claying once a year or every other year wont hurt either. It can even take off paint overspray that washing will not do. JMO J
Waxing right after washing won't necessarily hurt it, but you won't get as great an effect if you do clay it.
If you really want to do it right though, Just do exactly what this guy does. HE'S NUTS!

Banana wax is loaded with fillers, it'll look great until it gets washed for the first time.
Just wash & wax it. You'll never get the results the car deserves or the results a picky eye would want without using the proper products.
Sweet car!
