Whatever wax you use, do yourself a favor and go to walmart and get the $25 orbital buffer. It puts the wax on better than you could ever by hand and then use a wolley looking pad to buff off the wax. No elbow grease needed and it will look better than hand waxxed bar none. I use maguiers gold class on my screaming yellow stang and it looked better than the day I brought it home. Trust me, get a low speed polisher/buffer and you will never hand wax again. If you have Meijer stores near you they also have a buffer and hand polisher that is a mini version of the big buffer that is great for the tights spots and in my case great for my motorcycle. Its battery powered and comes in a kit with the big 10" buffer. Like $35!!!!!!

Whatever you do, do NOT buff that car without prepping it first. If you take a buffer to a painted car that isn't first prepped, you will swirl it to heck. To properly prep it, buy a meguiars clay bar, and rub down the entire car first, to remove the dirt embeded in the clearcoat. Regular washing will not remove this. When you do this, make sure to keep the bar lubed with water and/or a light soap. Then, wipe down the entire car with a clean rag. Not only will this remove the dirt, but it will also leave a nice smooth finish. Now, you are ready for wax/buffing. I strongly recommend AGAINST paste wax. It is about the worst thing you can use. Here is why:

When you put a coat of wax on your car, it looks nice. As soon as you pull that car into the sunlight, especially black, the wax will begin to melt, much like a candle with a flame. You wont see it melting, but it softens. Then, when you take it down the road, bugs and dirt stick to the wax, giving you one heck of a nice sandpaper feel to your car. Not to mention, that your car will begin to look dull after a couple of weeks. This is because the wax is starting to haze over. IF you really want to remove the old wax, to get down to the clear coat again, use a rag with laquer thinner, or, if you are afraid of using it, go to walmart and buy the wax remover (which is the same thing) and wipe down the entire car. This will remove all wax and other contaminants. This is what we do with cars every day at my detail shop. The only caution is not to scrub vinyl or emblems with laquer thinner. This will remove or discolor them. Laquer thinner is safe on all paints, except those that are laquer based, which were stopped being used about 30 years ago.

My suggestion for waxing: Buy the meguires mist and shine, or other brands of the same liquid spray wax. This will give a nice shine, and will not collect the dirt and debris as easily as paste wax. You dont really need to buff the wax onto the car. A little elbow grease will work great, and if you do it by hand, you cant put swirl marks in the paint!!!

I agree with brando.... i first use Meguire's clearcoat body scrub, then i polish, then wax... it takes most of a day... but it's definitely worth it!

everyone has their prefrences and i won't say this is best but this is what i use. the car feels smooth like glass afterwards with one full coat.

the company claims it has a much Higher melting point than carnubas (2-5 times higher if memory serves). the actual figures are in the overview of the product, which i misplaced

its called BLACKFIRE 'new car' kit and their 'deep gloss spray'. its a two step wax and the deep gloss spray I use after normal washes

Use an orbital buffer on a black clear coat and you'll be sorry....
