Buffing...orbital?
OK so my car needs a buff job BAD. I was going to pay to get it done, but Im pretty sure I can do it myself. I have painted 2 cars actually but never buffed um with cutting pads. Last week I waxed the car with a random orbital buffer. Its a cheap-o, one of those 10" ones from advance. Question is, could I use this to remove my swirl marks and scratches? I have made a few scratches lighter with a wool pad on it but that only does so much. Can I use this and get some cutting pads and do a 3 stage job or something with it? I want to do the whole car.
the ones you find at advanced and stuff don't have the power to remove any serious defects, the only thing they're good for is applying waxes and sealants
if you're wanting to get rid of deep scratching or sanding marks you're going to need something with good power, a PC might not be up to the challenge. if i was you i'd invest in a flex. its a little bit faster than a PC and has more *****, so it would fit your needs better if you're using to polish in between your painting steps
as far as pads go, it's not all in the pad, you have to find the right pad/polish combo...there is no "best" combo, just find one you like and stick with that

$150 is about the going rate but you can often find it cheaper. I would first try to clay your car, this will get any oxidation out then go with the highspeed if you still need it. Make sure you have them use a high quality sealant after the buff to get the most life out of the buff. If you were in Indianapolis I could do the car for less than half.

Wow! That is a lot of bad info!
Claybar takes out contamination and fallout, it will not remove oxidation. Polishes and compound will remove oxidation. The going rate will vary in your area, depending on the work you want done. A wash and a cheap wax will be 30-75 around here, and if your car id bad and you want a new car again, try 300 or more.

I second what Zaxjax said. No amount of claying will remove oxidation. And expect to pay 300+ for a good detailing job (better do it right the first time than having to do it again... worst if you mess up beyond repair.) [sm=smiley14.gif]
Good luck!
I can wash and wax it, I just need it high speed buffed for some scratches in the paint. It shines like a mo fo but still needs a good buff all over, its the stock 99 paint.
