Tonneau Cover Stripping??

Tonneau Cover Stripping??
I bought a 2 piece speedster tonneau cover for my stang, just got it painted and am now installing the rubber 'weather stripping' type stuff that goes around the outside of the 2 tonneau pieces. I went to Checkers[sm=badidea.gif] and asked the person there what would be best to glue this stuff with, she said this all purpose cement will work. It was just some random cement...I said what the heck, I'll try it. Well I just finished, and it seemed to make more of a mess than anything. I will know tomorrow if this will really work or not...but my questions are these...
Has anybody ever installed this rubber molding??
Is it necessary??
What is the best glue for this type of job?? Rubber to painted Urethane.
Thanks in advance for any type of help you can offer.

RE: Tonneau Cover Stripping??
i think that you should just use some of that 3m double sided tape. It is almost like a black foam type material. we installed some extra seals around the doors and the hood of our cor**tte (bad word on this site, haha) and it has held them on very good for about a year now. they havent even tried to pull away fron the painted plastic on the inside of the doors or hood. it is very easy to put on too, just peel one side of the paper off and stick it in the weatherstripping and peel the other side off and stick it on the tonneau cover.

Thanks for the replies guys. I used Contact cement, and it seems to be holding up pretty good. I will have to do a little more on the edges to hold them down, but other than that...it turned out pretty good.

Where did you buy your 2 pc cover? I just sold a 1 pc and looking to buy a 2 pc.
Your cover (if new) should have come with the stripping. Try going to a body shop looking for a type thin spongy gasket material with a 3M backing.
If the bottom edge is painted properly any 3M backed material will bond securely.
If you don't use the gasket you'll regret it later repainting the vert metal trim from all the grinding it will do. The rubber on the cover also makes for a snug fit. Good luck.

RE: Tonneau Cover Stripping??
I bought mine from ABCExclusive.com When I took it to get painted, the painter was very impressed with the quality of it. I did buy the two piece Speedster...and I think it's probably the one thing I was most excited about on my car. The stripping did come with it, and it seems to be holding up.

RE: Tonneau Cover Stripping??
oooooo looks good. The only thing that sucks is that you can tell that the tonneau cover and mirrors were recently painted because their fresh and the rest of the car is duller older paint (obviously) so it looks kinda weird.... but other than that it looks good
