painting trim
the black trim around the top of the quarter panel and front of the trunk has turned grey on my car. its painted metal, so back to black and stuff doesnt do any good with it. i think im going to just sand it down and repaint it. any tips on this? can i just use some black spray paint? and should i spray some clear on it as well to protect it?
thats what i figured... a flat black base with a light coat of clear on top of it. the trim at the bottom of the drivers window is rubber and still black, but from the 1/4 window all the way around the back of the top has turned grey and i cant stand it. but lets hope i have some paint and clear in the shop...and there will be pictures.
what kinda paint and clear are you gonna use? i want to spray my rear fender wells so they're black and match the front, instead of redfire. i just don't know if i should use flat black with a clear or gloss black.[sm=smiley5.gif]
i just found some low gloss black engine enamel in the shop and am using that. i couldnt find any clear so i had to run to wal mart and pick up a can. i ended up with the gloss clear. they also had flat clear, matte clear, and satin clear. i almost bought the flat clear, but wasnt sure how that would turn out.... but now im about to put some clear on them and let them dry and put them back on later tonight. and i have been taking pictures most of the way so they will be here too.
ok...time to make dial up users hate this thread. i got kinda camera happy this afternoon while doing this. overall it didnt turn out too bad, but def not perfect. the paint seems somewhat splotchy, but i think that is because it was like 85 and humid. but here is a little writeup with pics on what i done.
a few before pictures to show how bad the trim looked...

then i took the backseat out, and the 2 side panels so i could get to the 2 screws holding each side of the molding in, also had to take off the inner piece of black rubber that touches the window (just pulls up)

took out all of the screws holding the back panel in...

after that, all 3 pieces just pull right out...

then i taped off the rubber pieces and sanded everything down with a 180 grit sanding block...

after sanding, rubbed them down with some alcohol to clean off anything left, then hung them up in the back of the shop using some fishing line...

i sprayed them with some black, low gloss engine paint (only black we had). sprayed about 5 really light coats with about 5 minutes in between each coat. then i let them dry for about 4 hours and sprayed them with 3 light coats of clear.

after a few hours of letting the clear dry, i put everything back on the car, and put the panels and seat back in.
its not perfect, by any means, but it looks alot better than it did before, especially in person.
