I just polished this today, it was plain old cast finish with no luster whatsoever.

I acheived this finish using the methods listed on the 1st page by yours truly.

I was having a hard time taking pictures today for whatever reason, the picture is blurry and kind of defeats the purpose of the photo, but you get the general idea of how great of a finish you can acheive..

Aliminum does oxidize no matter how well you polish it. But you are ignoring one major factor... the rate at which it oxidizes is directly related to its exposure to the elements. The finer the finisher the smoother the metal. When there are less cavities or shallower cavities then less opportunity for dirt/water to get trapped and accelerate the oxidation. Like most things, if you spend the time up front you are rewarded with much less maintenance on a go forward basis. Highly polished aluminum is much easier to touch up and cleaner than something that was sanded and say hit with Tripoli and never touched with white rouge. I ended up repolishing my rims due to this, because I am lazy in terms of upkeep
