Question Best clay bar?

Which is the best clay bar to buy? I seen turtle wax came out with a liquid clay bar but I don't know how good it is. Also which is a good wax to use?

I personally like Clay Magic as an over the counter product(Kragen, Target, Walmart, etc). It works great. I got my kit with the clay and lube for $8. Mother's also makes a kit with the clay and lube but it costs about $14.

You can also get a clay bar from Obsessive Detail. I use this one as well and it works great. It costs more, but you also get more clay. Plus you can get some Optimum no rinse and use it as a clay lube (you save a lot of money on the lube by diluting it this way).

I have tried the liquid clay from Turtle Wax and it works more like a chemical cleaner. It definitely does not replace a traditional clay bar.

As for waxes, any wax from Obsessive Detail works great. The new Dodo Juice line that they carry is supposed to be really good but I haven't had the money to try it out yet. If you want to go with some over the counter, I like to use Mequiar's products. Keep in mind though that waxes generally don't last very long. A lesser known brand that I like to use is Collinite. It can be hard to find but it lasts a really long time, almost like a sealant. I use the Insulator wax (#845) and the Double coat (#476).

You can also use a sealant for longer lasting protection. Optimum Opti-Seal or Poli-Seal work great. You can get these from Obsessive Detail. The products look expensive, but a little goes a long way. Another place you can get sealants and waxes, plus everything else you need to make your car shine is Autogeek.net. The products are generally more high end stuff though.

I know I mentioned Obsessive Detail a lot, but I honestly believe that you can't go wrong with any of Justin's (the owner) products. He offers great prices with great customer service. He once sent me $50 worth of the wrong products, told me to keep it, then overnighted my products to me without asking me to pay anything.

I have used the clay magic a couple times. It seems to work alright. I too was wondering if it was worthy enough for a good job. Seemed to pick up a lot of stuff but feel like I needed more clay to get a really good job done. Justin is pretty much the grandmaster of detailing. He is an awesome guy to work with and I am sure you will be more than pleased with the products from my understanding. I cant wait to get some stuff from him.

I have a mothers kit, and I use it on almost every car I have washed. Takes a few hrs to clay bar, buff, wax and polish, and then the car looks like new.

I wash and detail cars for an extra job...quite fun actually =)

Clay magic and mothers are great... I would not use the liquid clay bar as it is crap and IMO defeats the purpose of real clay. Check out the Meguiars site and they have 2 other types other then the white clay they have in their store bought kits (which is so mild it wont pull much out of the paint)

the smooth clay bar kit they offer is not worth it! the one above or the aggressive (actually is misleading -but it pulls more contamination out with less work)...I have used all of them and like the meguiars professional ones or the Mothers kit...JMO

See, thats the thing. I recently got my 2000 GT white and clayed part of it. It seemed as if I had to rub pretty hard to get the contaminants out of the paint. Arent you suppose to just lid it glide over the paint? How long should you spend on say a 3x3 section and what motions should be used, etc.?

that depends, how aggressive was the claybar you used? you may need to use something more aggressive, but that will probably marr the clear and you would need to polish it out.

is joining makes sense and to add to the post above .....use lots of lube (sure we have all heard that before) and constantly keep the paint wet in the area your working on. I do 3 ft x 3 ft sections at a time and I never use a circular motion, only back and forth with even pressure but not so much that the hood or metal of the car buckles...LOL.

Remember to use lots of lube...I cannot express this fact enough (most quick detailers will work and I use Meguiars). Justin should have something for you and he is a forum sponsor (Juztang).

I have used the aggressive clay from Meguiars and had no marring but always follow with a polish and then a glaze and a carnuba wax....Justin can hook you up there too

Remember to always turn the clay or kneed it to a new clean section and do so frequently to help prevent any marring or surface scratches.....also IMO scratches or marring in a straight line from the back and forth motion while using the clay bar are easier to remove then swirls with a D/A polisher or orbital polisher. hope it helps
