What product do you use?
My car is a couple of years old and I always used a liquid spray type of paint protectant.
The main objective being to avoid excessive rubbing and friction on the finish. Just wipe on, no drying and rubbing off.

I think the color of your car makes a big difference with regard to your wax choice. I am convinced, bar none, that Pinnacle Souveran carnuba paste is as good as it gets for dark colors.
You can't go wrong with Pinnacle on lighter colors, but, for the price, I believe that Mothers FX Synwax lasts longer than the carnuba and gives top notch results.
IMO the poor man's version of Pinnacle Souveran is Mequires Gold Class paste or liquid. It does a good job at giving that 'wet' look, but does not compare to the liquidity and depth produced by Pinnacle Souveran, and doesn't last nearly as long.
Synthetic vs. Carnuba for optimum results? I truly believe that it depends on the color.
The signature II by Pinnacle is about half the price of Souveran, and if I had a silver or white car I would use the 'cheap' Pinnacle signature II and not the more expensive Souveran, as it would be difficult to see a difference.
Souveran is about 95$ and signature II is about 50$, so they aren't cheap, but you do get 25-30 waxings out of one tin. With Meguires Gold Class paste, I usually get 8-12 waxings, so Pinnacle wax is more cost effective than it first seems.
If you don't have a dark colored car like black or midnight blue, I think the best mainstream product purchasable at most auto stores is Mothers FX Synwax. It's super easy to use, leaves no wax residue, and lasts decently long. It provides outstanding results, especially for the price.
Ill end by saying this:
If you have a black or very dark colored car, you owe it to yourself to try Pinnacle Souveran, just 1 time. That's all it takes. : )
