Default Claybar Question

I have been using Meguiars claybars. Is it okay to buy clay at an AC Moore crafts store?

To me it seems like the exact same thing only a lot cheaper.

Craft clay is not the same composition as what you'll use on a car.

true! You wouldn't use cooking oil in place of motor oil. Automotive clay is also is safe for clear coats.

If you run out of the clay quicker than the spray, you're not doing something right. I tend to have to pick up another bottle of the spray solution, as one isn't quite enough for me to do an entire car if it really needs to be clayed.

I usually cut the clay in half right off the bat. A whole piece is too big to easily work with IMO. Then when one side gets dirty, fold the clay in half so that the dirty side disappears, leaving two clean sides again. Halfway through the car, I discard that piece of clay and grab the other half. I do the rocker molding and wheels areas right before discarding the clay.

It sounds like you may be just flipping the clay over instead of folding it. If that's the case, you would be using it wrong, and would be wasting the clay. Also, I'm not sure which clay product you're going with, but the Meguiars kit has two pieces of clay in it (as well as a somewhat decent microfiber towel). Most of the other over the counter kits tend to only have a single piece of clay.

You can buy just the clay from places like AutoGeek, detailsupplyoutlet.com, etc. You just originally asked if clay from a craft store was the same or not. If you buy just the clay, be prepared to have to determine the type you need, as it comes in various "strengths". What you'll find in kits is a mild or light clay, and what you'd probably want. The lighter clays are easier on the paint. A heavier clay can introduce scratches much easier.
