Stainless Steel VS. Aluminized
Hey All,
Got a question for the experts out there. I have been searching for an exhaust sytem and have found what I wanted. The manufacturer (Bassani) has the system in Stainless Steel and Aluminized. OK..I live in sunny California, we see a bit of rain but no biggie, winter temps at the lowest are 50 degrees, no snow, no sleet, no salt on the roads..summer there is no humidity at all..so here's my question. Should I spend the extra $200.00 plus for the SS system or save the bucks and get the aluminized system, Essentiall they are the same design except in diffferent materials. I am not looking for eye candy and I know the SS would look much "prettier", I am looking for a bit of performance boost and a better sound. Ok there's my reasoning, can someone enlighten me further as to why SS would be better and why I should buy the SS of the aluminized?
Thanks.....

For your situation, go with aluminized. SS can be a bitch to clamp and seal. I live in the North East and get to deal with winter and road salt. Good aluminzed will last me a good long time (not forever like ss, but a good 8-10yrs). Just my two cents.
rockcrusher, thanks!! I just got a private post from a vendor of Bassani's and he basically said the same thing. He also told me that the BX Bassani systems (aluminized steel version which is what I was looking at), internal components are all stainless steel, and that only the muffler casing and mandrel bent pipes are aluminuized. he said in my kind of climate condition, to save the $'s and go with the aluminized version, unless I was more interested in "bling...bling!!!"
BTW...on the www.mach1registry.com I've started a Group Buy on Bassani CAT Back systems...BX's are $449.00 shipping included if anyone wants in on the gig, let me know!!! The more the merrier!!! Contact me at: tach9@sbcglobal.net and I'll forward you the details or check out the thread under Exhaust Systems on the Mach1 registry.

Hey Dan02gt, yeah the prices are good..but to throw a monkey wrench into things..another company is selling Borla Stingers which are SS and free shipping for $449.00!!! Now what do I do????
No borla, sound like a$$.

You also have to think how much you drive the car, i.e how long do you drive to work and such. Most exhaust systems rot from the inside out. The cat's change the exhaust mixture to water and a less lethal hydrocarbon. Have you ever noticed when a crusizer pulls away all the water that pours out of the exhast system? That is what will rot a aluminumized exhaust system. If the car gets up to operating temp and the exhaust does to a aluminumized system will last just as long as a stainless system. If you do 10 mins here, 5 mins there. it might be worth the extra money for the SS just so you don't have to worry about it in a year or two.

I live in the NE not to far from Dan02GT. Winters are brutal on cars but the short trips will ruin an exhaust system very quickly, the salt doesn't help either. The aluminunized coating is only on the outside of the mild steel pipe protecting the outside, it is to difficult if not impossible to coat the inside of the system.

That would be my 2 cents!

Good points!! I can testify that the salt is BRUTAL. I had an aluminized muffler on my Iroc-z and whenever the roads were dry I would take her out to feed my cravings and when I swapped mufflers the aluminized one was looking pretty shabby inside after 1 year and maybe 15 trips on DRY winter roads, but who knows, may be different in your area. You should get stainless steel anyways, it is just awesome.

I agree with your logic on alum. vs Stainless, but the Aluminizing processtakes place BEFORE a pipe is made a pipe. So it is aluminized insideand out

Hey Guys, Thanks!!! Yeah maybe I should get the SS..but the savings of over $200.00 means I can get some other goody We';; see..Maybe I'll paint as best I can the insides of the pipes before I install them with a protective coating or something...any ideas on that one? Actually for where I am in Calif...and my driving style..I think the BX system will be ok..or better yet, maybe Santa will clear some more room off my credit card and then I'll be able to afford the SS...LOL..!!! Thanks for the info!!!!
The protective coating will just burn off I see your from CA anyways, minds well save the pennies from the aluminized system and pick up another goody.
