painting interior
I painted the interior of my '82 Capri RS about 10 years ago and I just used an acrylic enamal paint with a spray gun and the outcome was very satisfactory. Some jacka$$ broke into it about 6 months after and shatter glass all over the inside and yanked the stereo out of the dash - and it didn't leave any scratch marks in the paint job.
Dont paint it its not removeable if you dont like it afterall. check out www.nycdashes.com Get a dash kit.
There's more to the interior then just the dash. You've got the console, all the trim pieces, and the entire side/rear pieces. Its a lot of work to get it all out of the car - but worth it in my opinion. The dash (actual dash, not dash top) is the hardest part to remove and re-install correctly with all the HVAC plumbing, mounting brackets for the stereo, etc... I went from an ugly light-tan to charc.-grey when I did mine. I changed out the seats and door panels in exchange from a wrecked 1986 GT. Unfortunately I failed to take any before and after pics [:@]
Since he WANTS to paint it now, I can only assume he doesn't like the existing interior color - which is exactly why I did it too. If he doesn't like the outcome, he can always try again. Its either paint it, leave it be - or find one in a junk yard with the interior color you like - and in good condition with all the pieces still there. Painting will probably be easier.

Use the krylon paint that is made for plastic. Always prime it first. If you can, hang what you want to paint so you can hold the spraycan vertically, it's a lot harder to paint on the floor. I painted my scoop and spoiler with no problem this way. Good luck
