header and exhaust questions..
im going to appologize in advance for my lack of knowledge with these 5.0's and fox's in general..
but..
basically trying learn some things about these motors... for instance..
- whats with the equal length, and un-equal length headers?
- are long tube installs on these cars difficult? (drop/pull motor)
- anyone ever try these $150 ebay long tubes?
- what kind of gains can be expected from exhaust on these motors?
im coming from the s197 world, and know more than i probably should about those cars, and what to expect as far as gains, or installs..
any info or links you could give would be awesome. i appreciate it!!

Im not sure about the foxes or the equal leangth headers , but I just did a set of long tubes on my 94 stang and let me tell you they were a bitch to install . Had to raise the engine and on the drivers side had to take the lines off of the break master cylinder . I ended up getting 2 sets of header bolts because the first set would not fit on some of the holes due to the way the pipes were bent , ended up taking the first set back to get a different style . The bolts had to be the ones with out the attached washer as the washer would hit the pipe where it came out of the flange so it wouldn't line up. I paid 350 for my headers/with new H pipe from ebay they were the obx pipes . They sound really awesome and I do believe they help with some extra power in the higher rpms. Plus going from the 1 inch stock headers to a 1 5/8 inch let it breath all that much more , coupled with the explorer gt40 intak I am pretty happy . I think if I had to do it again I would have a much easier time of the headers the 2nd time around.
I've installed a couple differant sets of 1 3/4 long tubes on my '84 H/B.
One set was made by Hooker. They never did really fit right IMHO. I've used Hookers since the 1970's but never has a set that fit worse. Installation was a bitch.
The second set was a set of BBK 1 3/4" long tubes that almost fell onto the car.
In both cases the engine had to be lifted maybe 2-3" up and all the spark plugs removed.
I think the total time for installing the Hooker headers was about 6 hours and the BBK's about 2-3 hours.
Those real cheap E-Bay headers are probably going to be terrible as you always get what you pay for.

Compared to the s197's, headers are a piece of cake to install in a Fox. Equal length shorties will make ever so slightly more power than unequal length shorties, but not really worth the extra hassle of installation. I found long tube BBK's easier to install than equal length shorties. Long tubes make a lot more power than shorties. They hang down lower, but are worth it in my opinion.
