Ive used a clay bar to remove any s*** stuck to the paint to start off. NEVER use compound, it will hurt your clearcoat badly. With a dull/ neglected finish, Ive used a high speed buffer with a foam pad, with meguiars #9 swirl remover or a good polishing glaze. After that, I hand waxed with meguiars #26. Results were outstanding. Now I have been using meguiars NXT generation wax, even better, lasts longer. If you use a buffer, be carful on moldings, door handles, basicially anything plastic or rubber. You can scuff them up pretty bad. If you do, your pretty much SOL and they will look like s*** forever. But in all reality, using a buffer will make a huge difference.

Clay bar is very easy. Wash car real good to get all dirt off. Keep car wet in the area that you are working in. Rub clay across surface while keeping wet. You may feel a roughness at first but it will go away after going over the surface a few times. Telling you that that area is perfectly clean. Proceed over the whole car, rinse real good and dry after all done then start your polishing/waxing.
Very easy. Good luck.
