Default Upholstery Cleaning

I want to clean my upholstery and carpet in my car. I am willing to get it done professionally but wanted to get some opinions about the possibility of doing it myself. Right now it's less than 50 degrees outside and don't want my car to get moldy smelling if I do it with a carpet cleaner.

What has worked for you?

You can do just as well yourself as the pro's in 50 degree weather. Get a can or two of upholstry foaming cleaner and spray it liberally on the carpets. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub REAL GOOD all over with a firm brush. Once done, vacuum the carpets good and you should have a nice result. If you aren't satisfied with that then chances are your carpet is needing replaced - something even the pro's can't clean Leave the windows open all day if possible to help dry out.

If you really must SOAK the carpets, then you need a garage so you can let it air out real good overnight - that or use some fans to move air across the carpet.

Some places offer steam cleaner rentals. Before you rent one, make sure they have a stair attachement. It's a smaller head that works great on stairs and cars (because of the smaller head). You can do it while it's 50 degrees, just be sure it to leave it outside with the windows cracked to let any moisture evaporate out. Try to do it on a sunny day since it will help with the evaporation.

After you get everything clean, Scotchgaurd the heck out of it to keep it looking clean and keep new stains from appearing.

There are many people around who hold strong beliefs about carpet cleaning or upholstery cleaning, that are simply fallacious. These people are not to be blamed however, because these beliefs are quite common and have been propagated widely over the years, sometimes by recognized and established carpet cleaners.
