Hello everyone,

This is a step-by-step tutorial on painting the interior panels of your mustang. I will include
where you can purchase the items needed along with the cost of each item.

1. Items Needed:
Paint - Krylon Fusion - Use for the hard plastic interior parts - $5.44 each
Paint - Dupli-Color Vinyl and Cloth - Use for the dash and/or door panels - $4.98 each
Clear Coat - Dupli-Color Clear Coat - Use to clear coat the parts- $ 4.98 each
Sandpaper - 3m WetorDry P220 Grit - Use to sand the parts for better adhesion - $3.98 pkg of 4
Masking Tape - Any brand 2' and 1' - Use to tape off the parts - $1.50 each
Degreaser - Duplicolor Prep-Wipe - Use to clean and degrease surface - $1.44 each
Tools - Basic tools to take the interor panels out.
Place - A place to paint that is dry, low humidity, between 60-80 degrees and free of dust. Also look for a well
ventilated area. Try to stay out of direct sunlight if you choose to paint outdoors.

Everything can be purchased at Pepboys, Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, R&S Strauss and any other car
stores. You can find the products online also by google searching the item names.

2. Removing Interior Panels:
The next step is to remove all of the interior panels you would like to paint. Most panels click/snap out of place.
Some will have screws/bolts hidden by another component. Some will have push pins. If you need help
on removing a specific panel, leave the message on this forum and I will reply to it. Please be specific
with the part you want.

3. Preparing to Sand:
Alot of parts in your car with be filthy. My center console had dry soda stuck under the other peices that click in,
It is importand that you give your panels a good washing before sanding. If you dont wash them and you
do for instance have "goo" on the panel the sand paper will spread it around and make the paint have a
flaw.


4. Sanding:
Sanding is pretty straight forward. Take you sandpaper and rip it into about 4x4in pieces. Sand in a circular motion,
and apply medium pressure to ensure you giving a nice rough surface for the paint to adhere to. Don't miss
anything. Go over each part a few times. Pay attention to crevises, corners and edges.

5. Preparing for Paint:
After sanding you will wash them off again, use a rag with just water. You want to remove as much dust from the
piece you sanded. You can blow it off with compressed air if you have a compressor or a can of
compressed air. Let it air dry. Then you want to take your "Prep-Wipe" and wipe the surface in a circular
motion to remove all the grease and oils. It is important that you either wear latex gloves or don't touch the
surface after degreasing or the oil from your skin will get on it.

Now you will want to set your peices up on something where your edges will not get stuck to excess paint. So raise
them up so that the edges are not touching anything. You will want to paint the edges anyway.

6. Painting:
You can prime if you want, but is not needed. So the first thing to do when used a spray can is to shake it for at
least 30 seconds. Then hold the can to the side the piece and give it a spray until paint comes out. You
should always do this with a new can. Now you are going to paint in a sweeping back and forth motion over
the pieces, start spraying before you reach the pieces. You want to give it a very light coat holding the can
about 6 inches away. Let the pieces sit for 10 minutes. Now head back for your second coat. You are going
to spray the same way as you did the first coat, with a little heavier of a coat. Let the pieces sit for another
10-15 minutes. Now your ready for the third coat. Spray the same way as the two times, giving another
medium coat. Your pieces should be pretty good on color, but if not, wait 10 minutes and give it another light
coat. Thats it for paint!

7. Clear Coating:
Clear coat will add more of a gloss to your pieces, and it will also protect your paint from scratches and rubs. I have
always added clear coat, so if you choose not to use it I don't know how it will come out. Let your paint dry
for 15-20 minutes before you spray the clear coat. Then clear coat the pieces the same way you painted,
spray one light coat. Wait 10 minutes. Spray a second medium coat. Allow your pieces to dry over night, they
can be handled within an hour, but I wouldn't touch them. Leave them to cure.

Congrats!! When you wake up tomorrow, it will be christmas. Either that or it will be torture until you get out of school or
work LOL. Lucky for me I'm laid off for the winter, so it was like christmas.

I have a 87 rag top that I would love to change inside colors on. Looks like your pieces where plastic. Would it work on vinyl?

 

KRD, most of my pieces were plastic. the dash and doors were vinyl. for vinyl, you want to use dupli-color vinyl and fabric paint. you can get this at any autoparts store that carrys paint products.

 

It's one of the things I hate about the ride. It's white on white with white cobra rims, but has red black and white on doors and the dash is half red half black. I would love to go red and white and get rid of the black.

I don't know if I can do what I want to or not. On a scale of 1-10 how hard was it?

 

on a scale of 1-10. i would rate it a 5. it isnt diffucult, it takes a little time, and sanding is the worst part if you are painting alot of parts. i painted everything at once time. so it was frustrating to sand everything. but you can do parts at a time. and stretch it over a week or two.

 

what did you use to sand the air vents? How much sanding? If I understand it correctly you are just roughing up the surface, right?

Most immportantly.....it won't flake off will it?

 

thats correct, the air vents i did not paint. there are too many places to paint and just didnt seem practical, so i found black ones on ebay. but if you want to do red and white, im sure u can find red vents for your year. u can get them at junkyards for like 5 bucks
