not turning over? help
ok ive got the electrical figured out and all new "ground wires" and leads but now im not getting any fuel to the carb i can syphen it to the carb but thats still not workin its like im getting no spark i dont know ? i can just sit their and turn the key and crank on it and thats it like its out of gas .......and my oil sensor it broke the tube had a crack in it and its shooting oil all over ....so i capped it but that has nothing to do with the engine not starting .O and for some reason when u try to start itll keep cranking even after u turn the key off?so u have to jerk the cable off to kill it
Your fuel problem could be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter or you could have a problem with your fuel pump. I would start with the fuel filter and go from there. As far as the car continuing to turn over i've never seen or heard of that but if I had to guess I would say it your problem is somewhere between the ignition switch and the starter. Did you rework any of the wiring for the ignition/starter?
no i didnt have any problems with the wires could be at the ignition though...and i dont think its the filter because i can syphen the gas through it all the way up to the carb.. so i dont know im not familier with these types of fuel pump
Take the fuel line off at the carb and crank the engine. It should squirt gas like a wild man. The pump is mechanical and there is an offset circle in the timing cover that is like a cam causing the arm on the fuel pump to go up and down...pumping. You may be able to siphon, but that may be forced pressure. It may not be blocked but could still be clogged, or the pump not working. But you have an ignition problem. Unless you had the problem before you fooled with the wires, you have something crossed for it to keep running after to let off the key. If it works, you take off the wires, put them back, and something changes. It aint broken parts, it's probably not wired correctly. Suck up the pride, check it again, and go from there. You have 2 separate issues and need to check each. Not trying to be a dork, do do takes place and you have to look at everything. Good luck!
yeah, the car continuing to crank or powering thru is usually caused by the solenoid. it could be fautlty, but like weasel said, do double check your wiring. it is very easy to mix up wires.

Like as has been mentioned......if you are not getting gas to the carb, then start by replacing the fuel filter. If that doesn't solve it, then replace the fuel pump. If that doesn't cure it, then take out your sending unit on the tank and check to see if the "sock" filter on the sending unit is clogged with rust. You should be getting a good stream of gas at the carb with the line unattached. If so, then your carb needs attention. Take a screwdriver and tap the sides of the carb so that the float falls back down if it is stuck. If that doesn't help, then take the carb apart and rebuild it. A lot of guys don't believe in replacing parts to find a problem, but I do. I figure the old parts will eventually fail with age anyway, and while you are spending precious time working on it, you may as well uprade the parts while you are at it.
First thing first If you have fire to your plugs and compresstion !
Fuel filter check
is the Fuel pump working ( keep in mide you have a old tank most likely full of rust bits some times it can pack in places at the tank
line to your pump then fuel filter ). Things to try Take gas cap off blow are back towards the tank. add a rubber line and a larger fuel filter before the carb filter see if that will open fuel flow.
if you add on filter packs up quickly then change out to new tank! Oh carry a replacement filter like the on you add on , so if it is plugged you can change it out so you dont get stuck in the boonies

thanks Glen for further explaining the causes! i should have said in my experiance, most of the time it's the solenoid. the bendix spring, that's the long one that goes just about from end to end? i have only split open one starter. it was off my step dad's 87 ram 150, 318ci. usually i get luck and the starter/solenoid are two seperate pieces!
ok guys i got the car running.......... Yessssss.......BUT the startor is still trying to run and it is not shutting off so u think its in my ignition switch .because when u turn my key it clicks and there is no springaction if u know what i mean it goes from aux click off click and on and when it on it s runnin if u turn it back the car shuts off. so it kinda hard to explain but i think u said somthin about a spring in the ignition?
