Carb Problem!!!!!
heres my story.......it all started when my carb just failed. so i go to autozone and i check the price of a 1968, 289 and it comes out to 126.00 for a holley II so i buy it and i assembel it like i took it off so i start it and i have this shakey rumble feeling to it, so i take it to my friends dad and i ask him to adjust it and as he opens the hood he tells me whats wrong, one its not even a 289 its a 302 he knows because 289s wernt made in 68 and he ran the vin, then he tells me the intake manifold is wrongbecause theres vacume leakes, it belongs to at least a 73 so he tells me to go back to autozone and exchange my carb for a 302 carb with electric choke so i buy it, i put it on, he adjusts it i feel it kind of shakey but its cool, 2 weeks later im comeing back from school and my car just dies, i pull over to try to crank it up and nothing, it has gas. battery is charged.....nothing so i tow it back with my friends truck we end up breaking the radiator his dad suggests ripping everything out changeing the manifold i dont know what it is what do u guys suggest???????
First off. They did have 289's in 68, just not many. They switched to 302's sometime during production. Second. A carburator is a carburator. It doesn't matter if it's for a 289 or 302. If the manifold has vacuum leaks the gaskets are probably gone, or a hose off somewhere.
If it is just a stock 2bbl, then it should be an autolite. Also, the carbs from auto parts stores like that are not all good ones. You may have to go through several ones before you find one thats good. Don't open it up because they won't take it back then.
