Auto Choke stopped working
Well, just got my baby, 65 mustang coupe back on the road this spring. The auto choke was working fine, then it seemed to be racing hard and not easing up when the engine got warm. I had to pop the gas a bit on the road to ease the engine RPM. Then it would eventually speed up again.
Then one morning last week the choke doesn't work at all any more. So on cold mornings I have to keep the foot on the gas for two minutes before I try to head out. Even then, until the temp goes up it almost stalls when i get going from a stop while its cold.
Any thoughts? I'm not a guru at doing my own engine work, but if it is something that can be adjusted I can handle that no problem. I have the original shop manual as well.
Thanks for any help.

if i had to guess it sounds to me like your linkage is just gummed up from sitting so long. i would take some wd-40 and spray the hell out of all the movin parts on the throttle linkage, and than the choke where all the parts move around. Also try unscrewing the choke cover plate(you know the brown one) and just move it back and worth just to loosen it up. after that i would suggest repalcing the throttle return spring because they tend to loose there tension when they sit. and than go to advanced auto parts, or checkers or whatever and get yourself a bottle of sea foam and get the motor running up to operating temp and pour a little bit down the carb, it should idle a litttle high and than go back to whatever you had it, but what i does is cleans out all the carbon depsots and gunk that collects and sits in there after so long, if it still odes it after that than you may have just a bad choke
It uses a Bimetallic coil strip like you AC/Heater thermostat for your house, That strip has a loop on the end of it that connects to the choke plate as the strip heats up it opens the choke. That loop could have popped off the receiver it fits onto. The bimetallic strip also has voltage running to it the wire connects near the bottom of the black can on the side of the carb, this can also contains the bimetallic strip. If its not getting voltage it wont work right. (It could be a ground wire too I forgot how it worked) Either way it needs to be on.
It may just need adjusting, to adjust it loosen the 3 screws around the black can and with the engine off and cold hit gas to the floor once and watch the choke plate and twist the can until the plate just closes then tighten the screws and you should be set. If nothing happens when you twist the can the loop on the strip probably popped off its catch.
