302...u can almost buy parts for these engines at like 7-11 or Longs...maybe even the grocery store.......

the 351 is great but if your just gonna daily drive and ur gonna build the 400hp out of the 302 then jsut go with the lighter 302 and be done with it...its easier swap cuz theres basically no physical difference between your 289 and a 302......

Go with the CI! no replacement for displacement... 351W IMHO... More torque means less RPM for the same power level, less stress on the engine, taller gears for better economy. A set of AFR heads and a mild cam like a XE274, RPM intake, and a set of headers and you have plenty of driveable power right there.

Could even do a crate short block, just add heads, cam intake, carb and go have fun. Not much different as far as fitting in the car than a 302. My 67 is gettin a 4V Cleveland... lol. If I had a windsor with a good block, mine is cracked, it would probably get that instead. Built just like above with an AOD and 3.50 gears in a 9" for nice cruisin.. might even add EFI to it. But since I dont have one, its gettin the C.

I would go all the way with 460 and bore it and stroke it. But I would probably go with the 351 for a daily driver. But i would bore and stroke to atleast a 408 like twister said no replacment for displacment

351 if you're going to do it. Can make those blocks bullet proof if you want to spend the money. As for a 400+ hp daily driver... What kinda work do you do because I may have to look into that. Paying the fuel bill for something like that has got to be costly

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

why switch the 289 for a 302? whats the point? swap for a 351 or rebuild your 289. like said before, no replacement for displacement. i would rather stroke the 289. but depending on what year you have the engine mounts dont need to be swapped since they were the same mounts for all the smallblocks
