rebuild or crate

Default rebuild or crate

hey guys im new to the site and i have a 67 fastback with a 289that im restoring and i was woundering what would be better and cheaper. go with a 302 gt-40 crate engine or rebuild the 289

That's a loaded question because we have no idea of what your wrenching skills are. If you feel confident and have all the tools to overhaul the engine yourself, then that would be the cheapest and best way to go. If not, then go with a crate.

If you've got the $$$, go with the crate.

i am very proficient with wreching if i were to rebuild it i would use an edelbrock top end kit and a rebuild kit from summit
any objections?

if you know your business, go for the rebuild - you'll be happier.

what kind of hp numbers do you think i can achieve with this set up

depends, which edelbrock top end? performer, performer rpm, victor jr? pistons/desired compression ratio, cam?

so many variables - you could have a -300 hp motor or you could have a 400+ hp motor

the top end kit is the performer rpm kit that has the rpm heads, cam, lifters, and intake on the website it says 367 hp based on the 302

bascially after looking at websites and talking to you guys im convinced that a crate engine is out of the question im gonna have fun rebuilding the 289
