how does this engine combo look????
Just looking for some opinions on this, I plan on getting this 331 short block..
331ci Street Fighter http://www.coasthigh.com/Assemblies/Ford/ford_331.htm
4.000 to 4.040 bore - 3.250 stroke - Flat top piston
[ul][*]Cast steel crankshaft[*]CHP CNC Beam forged steel connecting rods[*]Probe SRS forged pistons[*]Dished and Blower Dish pistons available[*]Probe Industries hydraulic roller camshaft[*]Edelbrock Performer cylinder heads [/ul]
Directly above is the long blockShortblocks include: crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, wrist pins, rings, and rod and main bearings all installed in an appropriate engine block. The assembly is balanced and blueprinted. What else Do you think I should add to thing combination, like what rockers, intake, size carb, water pump.. is there anything I'm missing?? I also plan on getting this
Ford 289/302
Front Sump
7qt
Gold Irridite
11451
$159.99
http://www.coasthigh.com/Oil_Systems/oil_pans.htm#PAN do I really need it? if not do I at least need a high volume oil pump??
I am just looking for a good overall combo, I also am doing a pertronix dizzy and coil both II series, with the 8mm wires. The boss says I can start buying parts soon, and I really need to plan my budget/shopping list.

Why would you need an aftermarket oil pan? Its not going to be a max effort engine ripping 7000+ rpm is it? The idea of a deep pan is to get the oil a bit farther away from the crank. It will have a greater chance of rubbin the ground if its a deep pan. I put a hole in the Cougar pan on a rather large bump.. but if you want it, okay, but you really dont need it on a street ride..
You dont run 7 quarts in it just because it can hold it, unless you plan on doing long distance high rpm, or road racing
and most of the oil will be stuck at the top of the head. If you plan on doing that type of racing, a dry sump would work better, unless it isnt allowed in your class.
Intake, cam, and heads all depend on what type of driving you want to do, and where you want the power. Right? If its a daily driver do you really need 1.8:1 roller rockers? Some stock ratio rockers will not put as much stress on the valve train (notably the rocker bolts/studs) Get quality stuff, and nothing really outrageous unless you want the entire engine to be outrageous.. A good sensible combo of parts will do the best.
my picks.
RPM intake, 650 Vacuum Holley, XE268 cam(hyd roller is a good idea about the same size), new pushrods, Crane roller rockers stock ratio, stock new water pump, stock oil pump(because a high volume or high pressure pump takes more power to drive and you dont really need it in a daily driver), a good set of headers (even the cheap summit headers will work good) cermaic coated is nice but $$$. Either TFS heads or AFR190s, GT40 is okay on a budget, but if I am gonna spend it, it may as well be something lighter..lol. Ignition upgrades are a good idea, points suck. MSD and Pertronics both make breakerless ignitions for points style distributors. Mallory does too, and the ones I put in worked okay.
I only use FelPro or Victor gaskets. I wont use anything else, ever. Only complaint with Victor is they leave a residue on the head, block and intake that needs scraped off. I have never lost a headgasket or had sealing issues with either brand. Victor has special head gaskets for aluminum heads, FelPro should as well.
No need for trick of the week stuff that doesnt help it go faster, you can make serious power with alot of stock parts. Summit and Jegs are your friend, sort of... price wise anyway.

Cool, I'll stick with stock

Just want some roller rockers, so just don't go crazy with the ratio

I plan on mostly street, maybe take it to the track for a little fun, and just to know what it can do. Okay so RPM, and the holley, planning on headers already, alright, good tips, thanks thumpin!

okay, so here is the current plan now,
331 short block
Cast steel crank
CHP CNC beam forged steel connecting rods
Probe srs Forged pistons, wrist pins, rings, and rod and main bearings.
(the above comes from Coast High all balanced and blueprinted and installed)
Now for the rest
Holley 600-650 (carb w/spacer)
Edlebrock perfomer RPM intake
TFS wedge cylinder heads
TFS track heat cam
TFS chromemoly pushrods
TFS 1.6:1 roller rockers
Flowtech ceramic coated headers (the rest of the exahust is already inplace w/ 2 1/4 pipes)
Summit oem harmonic balancer
Summit true roller timing set
Stock water pump (new)
Stock oil pan pump and pickup (all new)
so how does this setup sound?? did I miss anything (other than the obvious, wait obvious may mean different things so did I miss anyting??)
