forgot how to set timing ;(
Hi,
I need to change my timing on my '65 289 C code. It has been a LONG while since I did anything under the hood but want to start again. What would be a good book to get to tell me basic info. as dwell and timing on the 289? Also is there a book to tell dummies how to do it?
Thanks, Walt

did mine last week...start engine..have a timing gun (im assuming u have 1 or go get a cheap onethere all the same)..now from the front of ur engine look down..now take a step or 2 to ur right ..point the gun down in the engine till u see a mark blinkin..this is on ur bottom belt..im tryn to explain it as good as i can but it is really easy..once u see the mark blinking, loosen the distributer..not the cap the whole dist. so u can turn it to advance or retard..u wanna line up the blinking line with the notch or piece of metal on the block..rotate dist. untill they line-u[p..
wish i could explain it better but if u done this before it will all come back once u start,it did for me..gl

Mark did a good job of explaining, but left out a few details.
First, you need to get your number one piston on TDC. Take out the number one plug, and poke a rag in it with a screwdriver so that the rag is snug in the hole. Using a pair of pliers, use the handles to cross over the positive nuts on the solenoid so that the engine turns over. When the rag pops out of the number one plug hole, you should be TDC with the number one piston. Put your screwdriver in the plug hole to feel if the piston is all the way to the top. Now, take the distributor cap off and see if the rotor is pointing at number one plug wire, which should be at about 12:30. If it is pointing at about 7:00, Then you are 180 out, so do the rag thing again until the rotor points to number one wire on the cap at 12:30. Loosen the distributor, and hook up your dwell meter. Connect the red wire to the negative side of the coil and the black wire to ground. You should be reading about 27 degrees in dwell angle. Turn your distributor slightly until that is achieved. Now, check your points setting. It should be around 0.017-.0.019. Now, hook up the timing light. Use some white paint or chalk to mark the 8 degrees BTDC mark on the harmonic balancer. Also, use the same paint or chalk on the pointer which is on the timing cover. Turn on the engine, and point your timing light at the harmonic balancer. Now, turn the distributor until the two white lines line up. Stop the engine, and screw down the retaing bolt on the distributor. Check your points gap again, and adjust if necessary.
