i once saw a mustang that had this symbol on the air filter cover, which was chrome. i've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a place to buy a cover like it. any ideas?

Probably robbed it off some old Ford truck, or 50's model car. It's what it reminds me of anyway. Maybe NPD has it in their truck catalogs.

Looks like a V8 symbol from the late 30's.

Yep, in fact I owned a '39 Ford with a V8. It was a flat head sucker, but it was a V8, and that symbol looks very similar to the V8 symbol Ford used back then. Take a look at these old V8 Fords from the 30's.
