Default Temp Sending unit test?

! have a 69 351W. Is there a way to test the temperature sending unit? I have it running to the stock gauge and I'm getting no reading. Is there a simple test I can do? Electrical stuff is not one of my strong points.
Thanks for any advice.

Sending units are very cheap. With the right testing equipment, you could test the gauge, but most likely your sending unit is bad.

A quick test is to turn ignition on, remove the wire from the sender and touch it directly to a good ground. Gauge should swing smoothly to full hot.

If it does the sender is either wrong type (i.e. idiot light sender) or it is faulty.

That's good advice.

It will also work on oil & fuel sending units!
