the best way, while you are in a thread, is to left click on the username of the person you want to pm:
a drop window should appear, then select the 'send a private message to ____' option:
you should be taken to a new screen than kind of looks like you typical e-mail form. just type in what you want to say, submit it, and you're good to go
if, when you do this, that option does not appear, your permissions may be restricted or your settings are changed. if that is the case, there are a couple different things to try
