Go to the oil forum in my sig they have answers for everything.
Now about the Harley. He had better be sure about the detonation or he can expect to be buying new and expensive pistons in the future. To help hear detonation you can wear earplugs while riding the bike. This cuts out the wind noise and allows the sound to travel up through your bones to the ears.Sounds CrAzY don't it but it works.
That's the truth, everything for the HDs are so expensive... I was just flipping through his bike's manual because it was lying on a table inside here and I noticed that it took 91, and as far as I knew he never put anything higher than 87 in. He's made a couple long (1000+ mile) trips on it with 87, and ran against me from a slow roll once and it hasn't blown up or acted strange yet. It's a police model... so who knows. It was pretty quick for a heavy HD, but it kept even.

I have asked a few mechanics this question and I never seem to get the same answer twice. I am wondering what everyone else thinks. If I am using synthetic oil, how often should I be changing my oil. I seem to get answers ranging from 3000 miles all the way up to 15,000 miles.

Another one is the effects of using 87 octane gas in a car that stipulates using 91. I seem to get answers from it really won't matter to it will ruin my engine. Everyone's thoughts?

Thanks
With Synthetic, 3k is too often and 15k is bull.
2 questions - 1) is most of your driving highway or street? 2) Are you conservative in your driving habits or foot to floor all the time?

If it's mainly highway driving and conservative 7.5K miles should be good, if you're city/foot to the floor 5k.

Use what the car recommends unless you have mods that dictate a different octane be used. Ie 91 Octane does nothing for a car tuned for 87. The caveat is as the car gets older, 89 octane will help with knocking.

I have actually been replacing my oil every 5,000 miles just to be on the safe side and that also seems to be the general consensus.

As far as the 91 octane versus the 87 octane question; it stems from my debate between my wife and I. I drive a 2005 V6 mustang, she drives a 2005 fully loaded nissan 350Z. The Manufacturer states that he Z requires 91 octane. My wife and I have been debating whether it matters since we bought the car. Thanks for any information or support for that matter.
