Default shifter location

I am planning out to do a tranny swap for my 95 stang. auto -> t5.

Right now still thinking of all the potential problems I will run into and one is the shifter location. I drove my friends manual VW golf and the shifter is right next to you around the right side of your hip (which i love). My mustangs auto shifter is around my knee (which is kinda a stretch). I haven't driven a stick mustang, are the shifters closer? Do I need a new center console so the shifter is closer to me? Or is there anyway to get the shifter more where the ashtray or convertible buttons are? I really like having the shifter right next to you so you have a lot of leverage when doing hard shifts like in the VW.

Oh and I am not going to move my seat closer, I shouldn't have to. I don't want my legs banging on the steering wheel each time I get in and out. Maybe I just have short arms?

Default RE: shifter location

Buy an MGW short throw shifter... It has a 360 degree adjustable handle so you can mount it closer to you. Like mine
