Default ROD BEARING NOISE!

Bought a used 00 GT Convertible with many tasteful mods but had high mileage so I knew it would need help soon. 30K miles later...ROD BEARING NOISE!!! Car is in good cosmetic shape still and only paid $5000 cash for it.

The dealer wants $4775 for a new long block, clutch, and rear end gasket. Comes with a 3yr/36k warranty.

QUESTION IS, DEAL OR NO DEAL?

If it were me I would buy a used Cobra or Mach1 motor and put it myself and save a lot of $. The other thing if it is a rod bearing noise you don't need a long block you should get a short block and transfer everything from your old engine over to the new one. The other thing the stealership is the last place I would take my car to any of this stuff they are just way over priced on everything they do. Most people will agree only take it to a stealership for warranty work

Sounds like a good idea. "IF" I had the know how, tools and time. I did get a disount from the dealer because I know the fleet manager there. Believe me I searched high and low in my area for a local shop and came up with either shady, half-baked shops pr super high end shops.

A DOHC would be great, even the MACH1. I realize it sounds like all I need is a short block, but this motor has 180k miles on it and I bought it used (rode hard and put away wet). So I'm just doing the long block for less future problems.

WOW thats a real good deal from the dealer. Im a tech at a dealer and thats alot of nice factory parts for that price. I have an 83 mustang where the motor is worth over 10 large. Drop the cash, have em do it and drive away.

I agree, that sounds good if you are unable to do it yourself.
Get the detailed quote in writing. (always a good idea)

Sounds like a nice car.[sm=Flahssssss.gif]

Dealer called this afternoon said engine swap is done! They will turn rotors free and replace with good pads then do the rear seal. DONE BY 10AM tomorrow. I'll fill you in on out-the-door cost.

$5200 out the door!

New engine assembly minus intake, new clutch, rotor resurface, new pads, and rear seal/fluid change.

What does everyone think? Decent deal, maybe. Wish I could have found ended up with a CA legal motor with forged internals and the works. SOMEDAY.

PEACE

OK Deal. I have a 98 V6 that I just had rebuilt. Motor threw a rod so a complete rebuild was needed. Found a little local shop that rebuilt the motor with all new internals, machined the heads, new valves, new water pump, new oil pump, new radiator, new clutch, new ignition pack, new MAF, new belt...2 year warranty. $2620 out the door.
