Rear Differential...Anyone?
I have a 00 Stang that makes a squeeking noise when i make rolling left turns. It's at the dealership now and they called and said they oiled the sway bar bushings and the squeek is still there. They think it's the rear differential (oh joy). I'm assuming this will be pricey since they have to take apart gears, etc. Has anyone had this problem? If so, if I don't fix it will it cause further damage? Any help you can provide would be appreciated if you've had experience with this!
Thanks!
Thanks!
I've got a 2000 V6 automatic that just had the differential rebuilt. It started out with a bad universal joint that wasn't taken care of and ended up doing some damage with the ring and pinion in the rear end. At a Ford dealer, the repair to replace both universal joints and rebuild the differential ran about $1300. I think they replaced just about everything inside, so this may be the "max" repair cost. If your differential is getting worn, it will get worse over time and eventually blow up. Do you have any leaking around the rear axel? It may be worth it to have the rear axel lubricants replaced. It's in the recommended service for 150k miles. Mine is bad at about 75k, but like I said, I think the bad u-joints had more to do with it than the parts being bad.
