build or buy
a buddy of mine has been through ford school and was born a bread on working on engine and cars. he says he can build me an engine for the same price as buying one of those remanufactured engines. (about $1500). he saying that if we build one it be alot more peppy than just buying the reamnfactured. i was wondering if anyone had any sugestions. i figured im not the first person to contemplate buying an engine or building an engine. but i do have to stay on a buget of about $1700.
Does he have a proven track record when building engines? If so,then let him build your engine. If not,you will have to make the decision on your own.One thing I have seen is that just because someone has been through a training program doesn't make me want to be the first customer.
buy from coasthigh.com
unless hes working for a machine shop and gets you a discount, it won't be as good, you need equipment to balance and blueprint a motor, and its expensive labor, by me theres only one machine shop i trust, and its 800 for a balance/blueprint job, now even installing your own rotating assembly after, figure about another 600 cheapo/1200 quality parts
only way a rebuilt motor is "peppier" through blueprinting a motor, at my school we built a 305, with nearly the same compression on an engine dyno we noted 21 hp avg increase, coast high's motors are all blueprinted
