Default Gear Install

Alright, I got a set of 3.73's kinda out of no where. A friend ordered some for his plus the install kit but when he went to put them in he found out his car already had them. The result of this is that I get new ford racing gears and an install kit for $200. Now I need them in my car. Problem is the rear end is like the one thing I've never done anything with. I'd really rather not pay the money to have them put in seeing as how the only time my cars have ever been at a garage is for state inspections, plus just the money factor. If I had some more info on it I should be able to get it done, but I wanted to see what you guys had to say. Has anyone done this before? How in depth is it and what special tools to do you need? Anyone have any websites with instructions or anything like that? Thanks for any help you can give me.

installing a set of gears and setting them up right for proper gear mesh and low noise operation is not something you probably want to try yourself. you need a pinion depth settng tool and a good torque wrench in addition to a heat source like an oven to heat the new ring gear to get it to go onto the differential. check around the local shops and find one that specializes in rear ends and pay a pro to do it and you'll come out money ahead in the long term. you should be able to get it done for about $200 labor since you already have the parts. you might try one of the local Mustang clubs also, they might have some people who can do it and tools to lend that might be a cheaper alternative than a pro. this is a messy job and not the best job for a do-it-yourselfer to take on.

Yea, that's what I was leaning towards, I have someone I know who I already talked to about putting them in, I worked at his shop for a while this past winter when I was home on break and he said he'd do it for around $200. I guess I'll end up doing that when I get back home for the summer. Thanks
