starter relay problem HELP!!!
Hi,
I just installed a new starter relay on my 64 mustang. I've followed
the wiring diagram and have it wired correctly. The problem is, when I
turn the ignition switch, there is nothing. The engine doesn't start.
The relay is brand new so I don't think it's that. Before I ordered I
just got the new relay the old one was new also but I thought it was
faulty because of this issue... so I now think it's something in the
wiring..
I've tested the following
1. Made sure there was a good connection from the battery to the relay
2. Made sure there was a good connection from the relay to starter
motor
3. Probed the wire coming from the ignition switch when the switch is
switched on, it shows there is voltage,
4. Made sure there is a good ground between the relay and the firewall
5. I took two long handled screwdrivers and put one on the battery side
of the relay and one on the start motor side and touched... Engine
started right up.
Is there anything I'm missing or what else should I check to trouble
shoot.
Thank you in advance...
Shane

RE: starter relay problem HELP!!!
If it starts by jumping both sides of the relay, it is either the relay, despite it is new, sometimes they come bad. I had it happen to me. Made me nuts. New part...gotta be something else. It was not, bum part. Anyway, if not that, check the way you have it wired. Sounds like all the ingredients are there, just not working together. The main thing is that is did start by jumping the relay. The key "on" and jump...start right up? Seems to me the relay then.
