Default RE: cooling fans

A fan clutch has a thermal spring built in to the front of it. When the engine reaches a certain temp the spring deforms and engages the fan. An electric fan is just that, it usually mounts to the radiator and is controlled by a temp sensor usually built into a coolant passage somewhere.
