Default 351w

Im looking to put a 351w in my 66 mustang. I wanted to pull one out of a car at a junk yard and rebuild it. What model cars and years have one. I was also wondering about which tranmission would be best i was looking for atleast a four speed and what model and years you can pull those too. Thanks for the help

Not sure about the Windsor. You can get a good 5-speed out of an 86- newer GT for about 150-200 bucks.

lots of different Ford models had 351 engines. Mustangs, Torinos, Fairlanes, LTD etc. talk to the counterman at your local junkyard and he can tell you much more than anyone out here as he makes his living knowing what parts came on what cars.

The 400 mod was a motor of its own. I has a big block bell housing pattern and the height from center of the crank to inside deck is taller than a Cleavland. The Windsor is a true small block, just like a 302 only different internals. The Cleavland and the mod have heads similar to a big block.

A lot of work vans between 69-78 had 351w with a 3 speed manual. Get one of those and find a top loader 4-speed trans to bolt up to the 3-speed bellhousing.

If it will fit may as well put in a five speed for the highway.

the 351 windsors were in tons of stuff. i found one in a f100 at my local junkyard. if you plan on modding the engine then you will want to look into either modifying a t-5 (such as a g-force kit) or buying stronger one like a TKO. that should bolt up if you buy the bellhousing for a 5.0.

the T5s will bolt up with a different bellhousing but they wont last, and you have to find a flywheel too. i'd say go with a 4 speed toploader(made to handle hp) and they will bolt right up. many 70's cars and trucks had the wndsors, mostly cars though, and the 4 speeds might be a little harder to find, though you can probably find one for 300-500 bucks.

289/302/351w all accept the same bellhousing. A T5 from a Mustang will bolt directly to a 351w. Good luck finding a toploader if thats what you want - they cost big $$, even for one needing work. I looked for a toploader a few years ago, and the cheapest I could find one - local bone yards or ebay - was $800.00; maybe I wasn't looking in the right place? Oh, and yea a T5 isnt gonna last long behind a 351w, a world class one may - or a Tremec will
