Well I got my starter replaced on 83 3.8L stang a few weeks ago, I remember the mechanic telling me later down the road I will need to get my ring gear replaced? I dont if he is reffering to the flex plate that the starter gear runs off, Or is their a smaller gear from the flex plate?

If it is an automatic then it will have a flex plate but if it is a manual it will have a ring gear on the fly wheel. You will have to pull the tranny anyway you look at it. It is cheaper if you have a manual cause you are just replacing the ring gear and not the whole flex plate!
