Look to see what mods have been done to it - it will give you a good idea of how it was driven. Not talking about stuff like exhaust, more like gears, cam, etc. Also listen for squeaks and rattles when you drive it - lots of older stangs that were driven hard have busted torque boxes and twisted bodies. Pop the radiator cap and look for any rust coloring, check the color of the oil, look for oil leakes around the front timing cover and under the car from behind (looking for a rear main seal leak). If there are any oil leaks at all or the oil / antifreeze doesnt look good - it gives you an idea of how the car was maintained. Since the car was painted - look in the door jams, back hatch area, and under the hood for signs of a poor job - and also look for crinkles in the sheet metal under the hood near the headlights etc to look for weld marks or anything else suggesting it was hit in the front. Same thing for the back hatch. Make sure the gaps between the doors, hood, hatch, fenders, etc. are all consistant to ensure the car wasnt wrecked and put back together poorly. Thats all I can think of for now.

not to bad, maybe a little high. if the interior is good and the drivetrain is solid it might be worth it

im def gonna try to talk him down. im not even sure if my parents will let me get it. im not supposed to get mine till they get back from italy. they leave in 1.5 weeks and are gone for 2. they said i can start looking seriously after that, but i might be able to change their mind if i get a goon deal. if i get the okay from the parents im gonna get it in the air and look for rust on the underside because i live in NY. i was planning on lookin in NC for one cause my neighbor's dad lives down their and he said he could hook me up, but if i find a rust-free one here i will get it.

It's not underneath that's usually bad with rust, it's the bottoms of the doors, around the hatch/trunk lid, or all around the edges of the body. Also on the topic of checking for accident signs, if it wasn't repainted inside the engine bay then you can look for paint circles around the fender bolts.
