internal engine build-up 4.6L
OK guys heres whats up. I have found a 98 4.6L out of a GT auto in a salvage yard for 800 bucks. the car had been side swiped and the engine runs with 120K miles. I am wanting to buy this and do a complete build-up and engine swap. I don't want to be limited to bolt-ons. I am talking internal here guys. where can I find cranks, pistons, rods, cams, aftermarket heads etc. Like I said I am new to the mustang scene and normally work with big block buicks or any thing old without computerized engines. Any help would be appreciated.
Later,
Jesse

lol there is a 4.6 tech section...but you will need a cobra crank, some manley or eagle h beam rods, and some good pistons like je or ck. www.seanhylandmotorsports.com

I have seen several advertised bottom end buildups for like 1300 bucks. Go pick up an issue of MM&FF. There are alot of advertisers there.
Or just do a internet search. Offhand I know that both power heads and patriot performance offer head/cam work.

If money is no object, you can spend about $3k and buy a forged stroker kit for 302 cubes. If you want the most out of your internals, this would be the way to go.

sorry didn't post in the 4.6 section MD. Will remember next time. I did a internet search before I posted and all that I could find is JE pistons and shi*. Stroker kit would be cool though. Trying not to run a supercharger so I am looking for a 10.5-11.0 motor. Probably have to mill the heads huh? I have a guy that does my valve jobs. I have done a couple but he's the pro. What is up with the PI heads. Are they the best around or do they just have more flow and bigger valves than the 98 earlier heads.

RE: internal engine build-up 4.6L
PI heads are the best heads available for any 4.6 out there (or any mod motor for that matter). PI stands for "performance improved" and have better flow characteristics - but have some changes to them that don't allow them to be a "direct" replacement for your 98 heads. In order to run PI heads, you also have to use a PI intake as well as some other minor changes as well. PI heads and intake are found on 99+ 4.6's. Also, doing a PI swap will increase your compression as well, as a matter of fact to 10.5 to 1.
So if 10.5:1 will suit you fine, just do a PI swap and save all that bottom end $$. If you really wanna rev then get a cobra crank and rev to the mood (no really more like 6500 safely, and more like 7k+ if you upgrade the rods as well). If revving to about 6200 is ok with you (better get a cam if you want these kind of rev's to produce any power) then just do the PI swap and get some cams and be happy knowing you saved 2k. Be careful which cam you go with though, anything over 230* duration with .550+ lift may cause PTV clearance issues with the pistons your using.
BTW - PI heads flow better than non-PI's - but only to .500 lift - after than, believe it or not, the non-PI's out flow the PI's,,, lol thats a funny fact. But, 75% of your valve lift is under .500 life so it doesnt really matter all that much.

Thanx man I will definately look into that. If I do the rebuild, which I will most likely do, I don't plan using the original crank, pistons, rods, cams, etc. I like to do it right the first time.
