how do you adjust valves

RE: how do you adjust valves
Hydraulic or mechanical cam? Do you have screw in studs? Stock rockers? Rail type or stud type?
In a nutshell: For a mechanical cam, look up the lash spec for hot and cold (usually only given for hot). Rotate the engine so that the camlobe for the rocker to be adjusted is on the base circle 180* from high lift. Tighten the rocker until the lash spec is met and lock in place. Tighter will result in valvetrain damage and poor performance. Too loose leads to more noise and lower performance.
For a hydraulic cam, position the engine as above. Tighten the rocker until there is zero lash. Turn the rocker nut down another 1/2 turn and lock in place.
For stock setups, look up the torque specifications and tighten 'em down. It's 15-20lb-ft for a 302.
