Default Starter problems

Hi guys,

Is there a difference between 5.0L starters, and 302 starters? I bought a new starter, and it turns slower than the previous starter. I went to the auto parts store where I bought it, and the counter guy said they gave me a starter for a 5.0L HO Mustang, and it's a different part # than my 76 Mustang II starter. Do FI motors have slower starters, or do you think it has something to do with the windings?

I can't return it as it has been installed by myself, and not a mechanic.

Thanks

Go to an autozone or other auto part store and have them check your starter amp draw and how much current your battery is puting out.

I would just tell them that you think your starter is cranking slow. They can tell you if your battery is ok and if the starter itself is ok.

If you bought a rebuilt starter there is a big chance it is just NG.

I looked it up online at autozone and advance and a '76 302 and a '90 5.0L have different part numbers indeed.

I agree with poobs you should have autozone check it. But where are you buying parts, that they could sell you the wrong part # and then say sorry you put it in... no exchange! ????????. I find both autozone and advance are great with returns. autozone once had to swap wiper motors for me 4 times to get one that worked. and the last time they gave me one and trusted me to bring back the defective one, so i would not have to dis/reassemble drive to the store then dis/reassemble for like the 6th time.(maybe the manager was looking out the window and saw my used police car and said "treat this guy right, that car is going to need parts all the time. cha ching!")

Just my 2 cents
