Default speedo/odo not responding

Well, I recently had my speedometer and odometer, including the trip meter, stop responding. I read on another forum that someone was able to get it working temporarily by hitting the trip reset switch. Same thing here.

I reset the trip, and drove around a couple blocks. The speedometer read ~20mph, and the trip meter was rolling. When I got back to the main street, the speedometer fell back down to 0 at ~40mph, and the trip meter stopped too.

Anyone have any ideas about a cause and/or solution to this problem?

As an added note, I've also been having tach accuracy issues. Sometimes it goes along with the engine, and other times if i'm accellerating hard, the needle flies up from like 2k to 5k faster than it would if i floored it in neutral. At one point, the needle even went up and fell to a resting state all the way past the redline as if it were pegged.

Punching the console sometimes fixes the issue, and puts it back to normal, but I'd rather have a real solution to this problem.

well, i haven't gotten a chance to take the dash apart and look at the cluster yet, but i did take a look at the underside, and is this the speedo conenction from the tranny, behind the O2 sensor conenction?
